Scoring a Victory: Hawks Defeat Wayland Union

Thursday night, the Forest Hills Eastern men’s varsity soccer team faced off against Wayland Union High School, winning 1-0. FHE also celebrated senior players Zach Elmouchi, Gavin Hanson, Sladen Van Andel, Josh Hay, Kallan Klaes, Demetrius Wingard, and team manager, Deni Tepic for the annual senior night. Students and families across the FHE community came out to both support our seniors and hype up the team for their game. The first half of the game…

Lose the Battle, Win the War

“You can’t win them all,” said Mr. Wysocki after the conclusion of the game, gazing across the field. He packed away the coaching headsets as the high school players gathered in a circle on the field, reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of the night’s game. Forest Hills Eastern suffered a 23-54 defeat against Cedar Springs last Friday.  Students and staff both attended the away game at Cedar Springs last Friday. They showed up in full…

Season Splashed Sideways

Many sports rely on reliable weather to be played. If it’s rainy, snowy, or stormy, outdoor sports will often be canceled. Tennis is no exception to this, and this year especially, bad weather prevented many tennis matches from being played. If the courts are wet, it poses a danger to the player. “When rain is on the courts, it basically makes the game unplayable,” Jaxon, a sophomore on Eastern’s JV tennis team, described to me.…

Best Done as a Team

The Girls Varsity FHE cross country team remains undefeated this fall season. The Boys Varsity team, while not undefeated, has been on the podium for a majority of their races. Through dedicated training and outstanding performances at meets, this year’s lineup of athletes has more than earned their shot at states. Currently, the Girls are ranked second in the statewide D2 bracket. While these stats are impressive, the secret to their success is simpler…

Making a Racket: Varsity Tennis Clinches the Win

Crisp, cloudy, and perfect for tennis: yesterday’s weather was just the first thing to go right for the Boys’ Varsity Tennis team.  Wayland High school made the trek to Eastern’s tennis courts for a conference match, and before the game, Nanda Murali – a senior captain on the team – shared his excitement for the match: “I’m feeling really confident. We’re one of the best teams in our conference. I’m just confident that we can…

Fighting to the End

The evening began with cool temperatures and clear skies. Eastern’s JV football team faced off against Thornapple Kellog. “We were very optimistic going in,” said Head Coach Cameron Wysocki. Eastern’s team fought to the very end to keep Thornapple at bay. The game ended with a score of 26-26. The team’s spirit, regardless of the tie, was never in short supply. Members of Eastern’s varsity team cheered them on from the sidelines.  The game began…

Victory for Varsity Volleyball

Tuesday night, the Girls Varsity Volleyball team faced off against Ottawa Hills at home – pulling off an impressive victory at the end of the night. How do they do it? Well, the team will tell you, it’s their community and support for one another that helps them play their best and prepare for their games.  The moment I walked into the gym, through the sounds of squeaking shoes and the thuds of the volleyballs,…

Rallying for the Right Team- Why Cheer Should be a Sport

As I watched the Eastern Sideline Cheer Team do their sets at our most recent football game, I found myself questioning “why don’t people consider cheerleading a sport?” These girls are not only flying through the air and tumbling down the track, but also smiling their way through it. Where others might just see the pom-poms and skirts, I saw the hard work and dedication the team has to their craft. Not only that, but…

Teeing Off To Third – Girls Golf Takes Home Bronze

The Forest Hills Eastern golf team is off to a fresh start after coming back from last year’s hectic schedule. During the COVID-19 pandemic many sports, including golf, were disrupted. This meant their practices, matches, and tournaments were shuffled around. But after an uncertain year, the Eastern golf team has shot off into a new season. This Monday, September 20, the girls’ varsity golf team played at Quail Ridge. The golf match was not a…

The Epic Highs and Lows of High School Football

It was a gorgeous evening, wisps of clouds backlighting the setting sun. Thornapple Kelloggs’ stands had a small home student section clothed in neon, overshadowed by Eastern’s supporters seated on the visitor’s side, adorned in hippie attire. A forty-minute drive through numerous cornfields did nothing to dampen school spirit. Tommy Sypien (’22), a player on the varsity football team, mentioned that “a big student section is always a positive thing.” Numerous students showed up to…
