Outside the Nest: Karlijn Gorter

When Karlijn Gorter (‘22) listed the United States as her first choice for her exchange destination, she had been hoping for a state with a warm climate – but even with the snow falling briskly just outside, her sunny demeanor was by no means dampened. She was simply happy to be in the United States to begin with. Gorter’s dream-come-true, however, did not come without apprehension. “Of course you’re nervous because you don’t know anybody,…

Alice is Making Music at FHE

Out of all of the freshmen that I’ve been introduced to this year, Alice Christenson (‘23) is the only one I fear is truly cooler than me. In zero hour, she and Mr. Engelsman, the jazz band teacher, always seem to be discussing music I’ve never heard, artists I’ve never seen, and genres I know nothing about. Alice, who has been playing guitar for 5 years, is the current electric guitarist for jazz band. Even…

When asked about what was different between American and Spain, Emma di Pretoro summed it all up in one wide-eyed response: “Everything.” Di Pretoro arrived in the United States about two and a half months ago, leaving Castellar del Vallès, a small town about 45 minutes from Barcelona, behind. Despite her initial nervousness for her year in America, she is living out a long-held dream. “Since I was little, I wanted to live abroad for…
