A Break for us and the Players: NBA All-Star Weekend

The NBA All-Star Weekend is a festival held every February in the middle of the season as a break for the players and fans from regular-season basketball. The weekend consists of basketball games, exhibitions, and performances, giving both the fans and the players a memorable time. It is also right after the trade deadline, which included many blockbusters from team to team, such as Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks and Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns.

The 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend Schedule kicked off with the Ruffles NBA All-Star Celebrity Game at 7:00 PM EST. The participants included many different celebrities, from musicians to other athletes, and even a governor! The game ended with a score of 81-78, giving former NBA player Dwayne Wade’s team a victory, behind a spectacular performance from superstar NFL wide receiver DK Metcalf. It nearly went into overtime after a nail-biting shot by WWE performer The Miz, who made it too late in regulation. The next event at 9:00 PM EST was the Jordan Rising Stars event, including soon-to-be stars. The format was basically a street basketball game. It kicked off with both teams defeating their respective opponents, either Jason Terry’s or Deron William’s teams. Afterward, the winning teams, Team Pau Gasol and Team Joakim Noah battled it out but ended sweetly with Jose Alverado calling the game, leading to him winning MVP.

The next day started with the Kia Skills Challenge, featuring Team Antetokounmpo and Team Utah Jazz. The Utah Jazz closed out the win in a sly fashion. Next was the long-awaited 3-point contest. There was a turn of events in the final rounds when Damian Lillard edged out Pacers duo Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield for the most made 3-pointers. The NBA Dunk Contest was up next. The dunk contest had recently lost its social relevance, but this year, the performance was for the history books. Trey Murphy III and Mac McClung battled it out, leading to everyone saying McClung caused a revival in the contest. Unfortunately for Murphy, the momentum of McClung was impossible to tame, leading to McClung, a G-League player who signed with the 76ers for the competition, winning both the trophy and global praise.

Finally, the anticipated Starter’s All-Star Draft was about to begin. For the first time, the draft occurred before the all-star game. Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James had to decide whom to select for their team. Included in the draft was slight controversy around Nikola Jokic and Lauri Markkanen after Jokic chose to walk to Team Antetokounmo before even being selected, not wanting to be the last pick or even a mistake from him. The game was offense-heavy, much like the previous years. We saw incredible scoring from Jayson Tatum and Donovon Mitchell, and astonishing leadership from Giannis Antetokounmpo to defeat Team LeBron 184-175. The All-Star MVP award was given to Jayson Tatum, who displayed stats of 55-6-10 in 33 minutes. We have seen impeccable scoring this season as two players have scored 71 points this season, alongside many players scoring over 50.

The all-star break was a fantastic time for the players and fans due partly to the dunk contest, which genuinely impressed everyone. The All-Star Draft’s new format seemed to have much buzz, albeit controversial. The NBA season will wrap up soon, with the Celtics and Nuggets at the top of their respective conferences. Other title favorites include the Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns, and Dallas Mavericks. Next year, there are rumors of a new addition to the all-star weekend to improve the stacks of the game, a supposed charity event for the common good.
