Robotics at FHE – Ben Gates

Senior Ben Gates is a member of the Comets, the Forest Hills robotics team. This team provides an opportunity for students to learn about engineering, programming, and teamwork skills in a fun, competitive environment. Unfortunately, most FHE students do not know that FHPS has a robotics team, much less what the team itself does. “The organization FIRST which holds the competition releases a demonstrative video and how-to-play manual of a ‘game’ in the first week…

A Premature Departure: Unity Christian Eliminates FHE

Last Friday FHE played Unity Christian in the district semi-final game of the annual MHSAA tournament. Hoping to make a comeback after their loss against South Christian, the Hawks started strong, but eventually fell short and lost 20-46. This most recent loss ended the Hawk’s football season with a record of 6-4.  The first quarter started off with a bang for the Hawks with Bryson Kuzdzal (‘23) making a 62-yard touchdown 9 seconds into the…

Beans in Leaves

Imagine yourself picking up a cup and taking a drink out of it. What do you taste – bitter, sweet, or both? In the daily sips, there is a constant debate about whether to be sweetened or unsweetened. Taking a broader aspect, the talk of drinking coffee or tea to keep people awake had stayed unsolved for years. Tea has been a staple in people’s daily lives for over 5000 years. Tea originated from ancient…

Meet Me at Midnight

Taylor Swift finally released her long-anticipated 10th studio album at midnight on October 21. Swift announced the album’s release at the Video Music Awards earlier this year, saying that the album was about “13 sleepless nights throughout [her] life.” Swift’s last album release was her re-recording of Red (Taylor’s Version), which came out in November of 2021. Upon its release, Midnights quickly became Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day and made Swift…

All the Rage About ABBA

You’ve heard their songs, and you’ve seen their movies, but do you know how the iconic Swedish sensation ABBA became so iconic? Imagine it’s Sweden, June of 1966, and Bjorn Ulvaeus just met Benny Anderson for the first time. They were each in separate, smaller bands in Sweden when they first got together and decided to collaborate on some music. Björn was a part of a popular folk group called the Hootenanny Singers, and Benny…

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year: Pumpkin Spice Donuts

Each fall, thousands of people put on their favorite cozy sweaters, gather their friends and family, and go out to pumpkin patches and orchards. One destination that I am sure we’re all familiar with is Robinette’s. If anyone has ever driven past it, especially during the month of October, there is often a mile-long line of people waiting outside of the door. Surely those who are familiar with the orchard know that a vast majority…

Donuts Delivered

Late nights and early mornings: students usually come to first hour with slow steps and tired eyes. However, everyone clearly perked up when administrators rolled around with a sweet surprise. Friday morning, 900 Meijer donuts were distributed among first-hour classes to celebrate FHE’s stunning SAT scores the past Spring, which were top-ten in the state. This surely made for more cheerful students and teachers the rest of the day.  English teacher Mrs. Barnes says, “My…

Set it Up

What can you serve but never eat? A volleyball! The sport of volleyball was invented in 1895, with its popularity skyrocketing over the past decade. One reason it became popular was that Asia made it an important part of many tournaments starting in 1913. Volleyball is typically played with two teams of six players; the object of the game is to hit the ball over the net and onto the ground on the opponent’s side…

Bringing Back the Blood

On Thursday, October 27, the Versiti Blood Center of Michigan is partnering with the National Honor Society to host a blood drive for the Forest Hills Eastern faculty and student body at Eastern High School. This is an amazing volunteer opportunity that comes at a much-needed time, with Michigan currently in an extreme blood shortage, partly due to a lack of high school donors, who typically make up around 30% of blood donors. This blood…

Putting to the Postseason

Golf is unlike any other sport, and FHE’s girls’ golf is unlike any other team. This team of seven is strong and represents the Hawks well on the green.  Although the team is small, the players are what make FHE girls’ golf special: Coach Brian Telzerow explains that “though we are few we have a high-quality group of golfers.” The lineup consists of freshmen Stella Bernhardt and Emily Gilbert, sophomore Megan Purdy, juniors Sophie Skoog,…
