Behind the Post Punk Scene at Eastern: Evan Arraut

Evan Arraut (‘23) got a drum set as a Christmas present from his dad when he was 12, which sparked his passion for playing music. Alongside liking the sounds they make, Evan enjoys the complexity involved with playing the drums. He plays in a band called Crowd of Thirty which started in 2018 when Alec Christenson (‘23) made an Instagram post inquiring about a drummer for the band he was trying to start. Evan replied, explaining that he was looking for a band to drum in. Taj Terry (‘25) joined the band in 2021 as a bassist, and FHE alumni Owen Danko will also be joining soon as a lead guitarist. Crowd of Thirty is a punk/rock band that commonly plays at the Skelletones venue. “I love the people at Skelletones,” Evan exclaims, “there are the bad apples every once in a while, but for the most part the staff and the audience are a very supportive and fun group of people.” Evan says that the most difficult part of being in a band is scheduling, explaining that “finding a day every week when all 4 of us are free is insanely difficult.”

Evan has been influenced by a variety of drummers, including but not limited to Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters, Riley Breckenridge of Thrice, Danny Carey of Tool, Brann Dailor of Mastodon, and Joey Jordison of Slipknot. Alongside the bands of those drummers, he has also been influenced heavily by Deftones and Highly Suspect. His favorite genres are post-hardcore, metalcore, alternative metal, screamo, and post-rock, and his favorite songs are “The Arsonist” by Thrice, “Go With the Flow” by Queens of the Stone Age, “Sober” by Tool, “Convulsive Beauty” by Te’, and “Leathers” by Deftones. He says that these songs inspire him and help create good energy while drumming.

Crowd of Thirty currently has released one original song, “Cigarettes and Kerosene”, but plan to release a full-length album sometime next year. If you are interested in catching a Crowd of Thirty show, they are playing at the Skelletones this Friday, September 16th, at 7 pm.
