This Friday, March 25th, students and staff alike will don all shades of orange to raise awareness for childhood hunger. Specially-made orange Kids Food Basket t-shirts are available for 10 dollars all this week to be worn on Friday. The money raised through the t-shirt sales will go directly to Kids Food Basket, supporting children in need all across West Michigan.
All this week and the few days leading up to Spring Break, Eastern is raising money for Kids Food Basket. Since the KFB club started at Eastern last year, biannual fundraisers for KFB have marked the beginning and end of the school year. Just as this fall’s Food-raiser was a huge success, with competing 3rd-hour classes bringing in over 1000 lbs of food on KFB’s wishlist, this week’s spring fundraiser is set to make a similar impact.
With the main aspect of the spring fundraiser focusing on awareness of childhood hunger, the KFB club has posted flyers with statistics and quotes about childhood hunger and is running a spirit week for the whole high school all this week. Participation from all grade levels has been outstanding, and the rest of the week is expected to have just as much. Starting the week strong with back-to-back pajama day and professional day brought out contrasting sides of attire at Eastern. Tomorrow’s spirit day, in honor of March Madness, is college/jersey day. To round out the week, we turn to days more focused on the spirit of childhood hunger awareness: Farmer day, promoting healthy, home-grown foods, and, of course, Orange Out Friday!
Orange is the main color of the Kids Food Basket organization and has become synonymous with childhood hunger awareness. As March is national childhood hunger awareness month, it is especially important for KFB as they work to increase their funds devoted to expanding their outreach.
Along with the awareness, the KFB club is also raising funds. The t-shirt sales will add to the money raised, but by far the most donations come from our community – friends and families at Eastern who decide to donate. A special qr-code was made specifically for Go Orange month, and all donations through the code go directly to Kids Food Basket.
Eastern’s KFB club Instagram page offers updates on all fundraisers, ways to help, and spirit week announcements. Follow them at fhe.kfb.club and stay up to date on all fundraising activity at Eastern.
Soon it is time for staff and students to take a holiday from work and school with spring break, but childhood hunger never takes a break. Now is the time to step up and raise awareness and funds for children in West Michigan. By focusing on a real problem facing countless kids in this county, the force that is the Eastern community can stand together – standing against childhood hunger.
