Introducing the FHE Mask Club!

This summer, the idea for the Forest Hills Eastern Mask Club was born during a socially-distanced hammocking trip as Palak Rekhani (‘22) and Sara Plante (‘22) discussed the variety of crafts they had attempted over quarantine to stay busy. “We [were talking] about our time during quarantine, and how we passed it trying new crafts,” the co-presidents explained. “It struck us that we should start a Mask Club, because during this pandemic masks are very important to keep people safe and having access to them is crucial for our community to fight against COVID-19.”

“The purpose [of the Mask Club] is to provide organizations around Grand Rapids (such as food banks and shelters) with masks to have on hand. The participants will be making [fabric] masks, collecting surgical masks, and delivering them to organizations that the club chooses.” Tutorial videos, templates, and packs of materials will be provided for participants. Time spent making and delivering masks will also qualify as NHS volunteer hours.

The first Mask Club meeting will be held today over zoom at 3:00 after school. Moving forward, meetings will be held one to two times per month. “A typical meeting will entail a check-in on how people are progressing, answering questions, and adjusting as we learn people’s needs. We will also be brainstorming ways to collect masks and where to donate them if anyone has suggestions,” described Sara. “The club is extremely flexible because it will be mostly making masks, which you can do at your own pace whenever it works for you.”

Palak and Sara suggest that club participants have access to a sewing machine if they plan on making masks. “Do not worry if you have never made a mask before; we have provided a Google Classroom with instructions. For more assistance, there are some people [in the club] that can guide you through making one!”

Make sure to join the google classroom (code: czhfd2z) for updates, and contact Palak (21200@fhps.net), Sara (21362@fhps.net) or Mrs. Barnes (dbarnes@fhps.net), Staff Adviser, for additional information!
