The traveling cast of The Lion King just finished their 16 show run last weekend at DeVos Performance Hall. This show is still on tour and has been beyond successful. This summer, The Lion King hit its 9,000th performance on Broadway. This miraculous milestone has only been attained by two other Broadway shows: Phantom of the Opera and Chicago. Over 95 million people around the world have experienced this six-time Tony Award-winning musical. The Lion King has been awarded best musical and best costume design along with four titles.
Last week I got the opportunity to witness this prodigious musical. I waited in my seat with utter anticipation and excitement. While The Lion King has toured in Michigan in the past, I have never gotten the opportunity to see it. Live theatre is one of my true loves, I was in pure disbelief when I found out I was getting the chance to see this show.
I was absolutely mesmerized by this show. The quality of the costumes that the performers wore were beyond anything I had ever seen. Every animal on stage came with a puppet, headpiece, and/or moving part(s). Taylor Reynolds, a junior at Forest Hills Eastern also saw The Lion King, “I’ve seen it once before when I was in third grade, but it was so cool to see it again after I found my love for theatre. I was able to see it from a whole new perspective.”
After seeing The Lion King, I now fully understand why this show has earned six Tony awards. With its eye-catching design and heartwarming music, it’s safe to say that The Lion King is one of the most phenomenal musicals I have ever seen.
